It’s no secret that Madisyn Armstrong is incredibly dedicated – but it’s her bubbly energy and infectious spirit that truly set her apart. A rising star in the world of distance swimming, Madi pairs unstoppable drive with a deep love for the ocean, thriving in the toughest conditions and pushing her limits with every stroke. Her resilience shone through with podium finishes in the 32km Traversée du Lac St-Jean (7 hours, 41 minutes), the 36km Capri-Napoli Marathon, and the 57km Santa Fe Coronda (9 hours, 33 minutes). As a JAYD Ambassador, Madi embodies endurance, adventure, and pure joy for the sport. Whether she’s training for her next big race or inspiring others to take the plunge into distance, she reminds us all just how magical the water can be.

What inspired you to dive into the world of open water swimming, and what keeps you hooked?

I grew up doing surf life saving from the age of 4 so I was always comfortable swimming in the open water. I moved to an open water-specific program on the Sunshine Coast when I was 17 & I loved the training. I made my first junior AUS team and started getting to travel the world for competitions & everything just progressed from there!

We have to ask - what was on your mind during the 57km Santa Fe Coronda swim?

Swimming for such a long time, there’s obviously a lot of head noise to combat. But for the most part, I’m usually pretty focused. Whether that’s on my stroke efficiency, race tactics or just positive self talk (I talk to myself a lot I feel a little crazy 😂)

How do you mentally prepare for long-distance swims?

The mental preparation for these races is arguably just as important as the physical. For me, it’s getting myself ready to focus for such a long time and ready to push my body to its limits. But like any race long or short, just running through my pre race routine to help channel the nerves and reinforce my race strategies.

What's your favourite pre-race meal or snack?

With ultra marathons, pre race nutrition is CRUCIAL. For international competitions I have to be a little adaptable with my pre race snacks based on what’s available to me but it’s always carb focused! & a gel on the way to the start line.

Have you had any unexpected encounters with marine life during your swims?

I raced a world cup in Seychelles where I had a pod of dolphins swim under me 🥹 (I did have an initial moment of panic thinking they were sharks though 😂)

How do you stay motivated during challenging training sessions?

For me it’s easy to stay motivated when I’m enjoying it! I love having a good squad & a fun atmosphere so when I’m in the trenches I know I’m not alone & my teammates and I can push each other through it & have a good laugh after!

How do you balance your training with other aspects of your life?

Obviously this is tough with the intense nature of our sport but life balance is key! It’s so important to have a life away from the pool, whether that’s uni or work or both! It’s important to make some time for social too!

What's the best piece of advice you've received in your swimming career?

When I was young I used to really struggle with pre race nerves so when I was behind the blocks my Dad would get me to spot him in the stands and give him a smile. I feel like that has translated throughout my swimming career, I always want to be smiling and having a laugh before my races.

How do you celebrate after completing a major swim event?

I love to celebrate & have some fun with my friends & then once my stomach settles down post race from all the gels, a sweet treat of course!!

If you weren’t a swimmer, what sport would you take up instead?

I grew up playing netball and touch football so maybe netball or AFLW 🤷

JAYD swimwear is built for action - what do you look for in the perfect swimsuit?

Swimming so many kilometres in a week comfort is obviously a big one but I also love that my JAYD's help me hold my core in which helps me keep my stroke connected (especially when I start to fatigue). And they look great obviously 💁

What’s playing on your pre-race hype playlist?

Ooo this is tough! My housemates & I are loving Olivia Dean at the moment & always the Wombats when I’m with my little sister ❤️

What’s next for you in your swimming journey?

My next race is a 32km marathon in Canada in July!
