Athletic swimwear fit is not fashion swimwear fit

Athlete-fit swimwear is secure and compressive on purpose. It may feel firmer than a fashion bikini, and that’s the fit working, not a sizing fail. Performance fabric (premium Italian face fabric with a 100% PBT lining) doesn’t stretch like soft fashion fabric, so the “second skin” hug you feel on land is what keeps the suit put through strokes, turns, and entries. The 30-second movement checklist

Before you commit, run three quick checks. They’re the difference between “looks good in the mirror” and “stays put for the whole set.”

Overhead reach

Arms up like a freestyle catch. Watch the neckline: it shouldn’t drop into a scoop that needs constant yanking. Check the back for ride-up and the legs for shift. If everything slides when your arms go high, size or cut isn’t right for how you move.

Squat / stand

Drop into a squat and stand up. Hips and bum coverage should stay put. A little stretch is normal; a full ride-up that screams wrong cut or size is your cue to try another size or a more secure style.

Dive / entry feel (or twist + reach)

Mimic a dive entry or a sharp torso twist with a reach. Straps shouldn’t gap. Chest should stay locked without a shelf bra (JAYD one-pieces are designed sleek and secure without padding). If you need both hands on the straps after every entry, keep looking.

Long torso, between sizes, and when to size up

Measure bust, waist, hips, and your torso loop, then match the style-size guide. Don’t guess from clothing size.

  • Between chart measurements? Size up.
  • Prefer a more relaxed athlete fit? Size up.
  • Long torso? Follow long-torso callouts on the style-size guide (and look for long-torso options where available, e.g. Zimmy Long Torso colourways on ocean/training assortments).

What “secure” looks like on a JAYD one-piece

  • Hips: Sit high on or above the hip bone (helps elongate the leg line and keeps torso length honest).
  • Chest / neckline: At least a hand-width below the collarbone; pull up from the hips if it sits too low.
  • Torso: Fabric lays flat. Bunching usually means too big.
  • Straps: Finger under the strap, lift about 2–3 inches max. Higher = likely to shift on entry.

FAQ

Does athletic swimwear run small?

It runs compressive, not “vanity small.” JAYD is designed secure for activity, so it can feel tighter than fashion swimwear in the same labelled size. Use measurements + the style-size guide. Between sizes, size up.

Should training suits feel tight when dry?

Yes. A firm second-skin hug on land is normal. It should still let you breathe and move. If straps dig hard or range of motion is blocked, go up a size or try a different cut. Fabric softens slightly once wet.

Should I size up or down in performance swimwear?

Default: between sizes or long torso → size up. Don’t size down hoping it will “stretch out” like fashion suits. Chlorine-resistant Italian fabric with 100% PBT lining holds its compression.

Can I use my clothing size for JAYD?

Not reliably. Clothing size is a weak proxy for swim fit. Measure bust, waist, hips, and torso loop, then match the brand chart for that style. Remember sizing is just a number

What quick checks show a training swimsuit will stay put?

Overhead reach (no neckline/back drop), squat/stand (hips stay put), and dive or twist + reach (straps and chest stay secure). Pair those checks with a fixed-back / high-security style built for movement.
