Red and Green Flags of Your Menstrual Cycle: What Your Period Says About Your Health

JAYD Swimwear, Wednesday Wellness Blog post with Chae Calder from the Wellness Emporium, discussing red & green flags of your menstrual cycle

Your menstrual cycle is more than just a monthly event - it's a key indicator of your overall health. A well-balanced cycle reflects hormonal harmony, while irregularities can signal underlying issues that need attention. Here's how to recognise the green flags (signs of a healthy cycle) and red flags (potential concerns to investigate when it comes to your period).

Green Flags: Signs of a Healthy Menstrual Cycle

  1. Regular Cycle Length (24-35 Days): Your period arrives at fairly consistent intervals, indicating stable hormone function.
  2. Predictable Symptoms: Mild PMS symptoms such as slight bloating or mood changes, but nothing that disrupts daily life.
  3. Moderate Flow (4-7 Days): Bleeding that is neither excessively heavy nor too light, suggesting balanced oestrogen and progesterone levels.
  4.  Minimal Pain or Discomfort: Some cramping is normal, but it should be manageable and not interfere with your routine
  5. Healthy Blood Colour: Bright red to deep reed bleeding with minimal clotting is a good sign of a well-functioning uterus and healthy blood flow.

Red Flags: Signs Your Cycle May Need Support

  1. Irregular or Absent Periods: If your cycle is shorter than 24 days, longer than 35 days or missing altogether, it could indicate hormonal imbalances such as PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, or stress-related issues.
  2.  Severe PMS or PMDD: Extreme mood swings, depression, anxiety, or severe bloating before your period could be signs of hormonal imbalances like oestrogen dominance or low progesterone.
  3.  Heavy or Prolonged Bleeding: Bleeding for more than seven days or experiencing heavy clotting may suggest issues like fibroids, endometriosis, or nutrient deficiencies.
  4.  Intense Cramps or Pelvic Pain: Pain that requires medication or disrupts your daily activities could be a sign of endometriosis, adenomyosis, or inflammation.
  5. Spotting Between Periods: While occasional spotting can be normal, frequent mid-cycle bleeding may indicate hormonal imbalances, ovulatory issues, or even reproductive conditions.
  6.  Unusual Blood Colour:  Dark brown, very light pink, or greyish discharge could indicate concerns such as hormonal fluctuations, low iron levels, or even infections.

What to Do If You Notice Red Flags

If you’re experiencing any of these red flags, it’s important to listen to your body. Addressing lifestyle factors like diet, stress, and sleep can often improve menstrual health. However, if symptoms persist, consulting a healthcare professional such as a naturopath can help uncover the root cause and provide targeted support.
