Healthy Hair Please!

How do swimmers keep their hair healthy?

The feeling of gliding through the water can feel serene until you remember the damage that the chlorinated water is likely doing to your luscious hair.

Swimming is a refreshing and enjoyable activity, but it's important to take care of your hair to prevent chlorine exposure and damage aka. green or crispy hair...

Fear not, read below for our top tips on keeping your hair healthy while swimming:

Hair Care Before Swimming

1. Pre-soak your hair

Drenching your hair in fresh water allows your hair to absorb some of that water before a swim, there is less room for chlorine or salt to absorb into your hair strands.

2. Create a protective barrier: Moisturise and condition

Gently moisturise hair with a pea sized amount of conditioner to your hair for extra protection. This helps reduce the amount of water absorbed while swimming. Bonus points if you add a pea sized amount for extra protection before putting on your JAYD swimming cap

Here at JAYD our favourite conditioner is TRISWIM.

3. Cover up: Use swimming caps

Speaking of, swimming caps are a great way to protect your hair from getting tangled and damaged while you swim. When putting on the swimming cap ensure you have moisturised and wet your hair first to reduce damage while putting on the cap. Wear a tight fitting swim cap to reduce water from touching your hair and giving it an added layer of protection from the harmful effects of chlorine. ps. we have caps! Find them here

Hair Care After Swimming

4. Rinse with chlorine removing shampoo

Rinse your hair completely with fresh water after you have finished swimming. After rinsing, wash with a specially formulated shampoo for removing chlorine from your hair. These remove the physical effects of chlorine and odour. If you have blonde hair, this is especially important, as the greening effect of chlorine is more noticeable on lighter-coloured hair.

5. Follow with a nourishing conditioner

Condition your hair! Apply a nourishing conditioner from root to tip and rinse thoroughly - our fave is TRISWIM Conditioner. The longer the conditioner stays in the hair the more moisturised it becomes.

It sounds like a lot, but it's the same as kitting up for any sport!
Happy swimming,
