Something that's been circulating a lot lately is meditation - An ancient practice that has been around for SOOO many years yet only become 'popular' or 'mainstream'. You may have come across classes, events, online audios or just the word floating around. Whether you meditate daily, occasionally or feel confused or intimidated by the idea, I'm here to break down its simplicity and help you understand its power.
Firstly, there is no right or wrong way to meditate, despite what you may have seen or heard. It's entirely how you choose to practice. Personally, I like to meditate every single morning as soon as I wake up before starting my day. I use the Insight Timer app and aim for 30mins each time. Some days its's 10,15, 20 or 30 mins - I go with the flow depending on how much time I have. I don't use music or guided meditation audio - though I would recommend this if you are just starting out, as it can help you ease into the practice. I simply sit in stillness and silence, observing my thoughts, feelings and emotions, often beginning with a bit of a breath work to begin my practice to ground myself.
Many people get confused with meditation thinking the mind must be completely empty or that they have to remain totally still, but that's not the case. In my opinion it's about being aware of your thoughts and feelings that are present, and actually taking time to process them - something we often neglect or avoid. In our fast paced, "go-go-go" society, it's so important to take time to just be - not doing, not actively thinking, just being in our own energy, breathing consciously, and observing the mind.
I like to think of it as creating a clean slate for the day ahead - emptying the mind, letting go of anything that no longer serves me through the breath, and tuning into the energy I wish to receive that day, or maybe setting a personal intention. How you meditate is entirely up to you - it can be at any time of the day, lying down or seated, alone or in a group, with or without music, with or without breath work, guided or self-led. You determine the power of your meditation. Every day might feel different and that's okay - meditation is here to support you through every season of life. It's truly one of the most powerful healing tools.
